Armenian is a continuation of a group of Indo-European languages intermediate between Indo-Iranian (Aryan) and Greek, but distinct from both. As a result of contact with other languages, Armenian has developed in its own way and is widely removed from the early Indo-European type. Although spoken in antiquity, it was not recorded in writing until the early 5th cent. A.D. At that time an alphabet of 36 letters was specially designed for Armenian by St. Mesrop, who used Greek and Iranian letters as a basis.
